God Bless America!

Hey everyone,

As someone who spent 8 years in a country that had a ruthless dictator, I am so grateful for this incredible country we live in.  When I lived in Congo (back then it was Zaire) the transportation system in larger cities started to get really bad. College students dared to protest against President Mobutu about that issue, voter fraud, and other human rights violations.

Mobutu wanted to send a message to those students so he sent his special soldiers (men from his tribe in northern Congo who were very loyal) to teach a lesson.

At least 100 students were killed, simply because they opened their mouths!!  Their bodies were dumped in the larger rivers and national parks.  The hope was that the crocodiles, lions, and leopards would take care of them and Mobutu would be able to cover up this unthinkable act!  The animals didn’t go along with his plan.  Instead, there were bodies washed up on the river banks and bodies left in the parks.

When you have family and friends over this weekend and can talk freely about any subject. When you go to church this Sunday and can freely worship, take some time and think about what you are thankful for.

I’m thankful I was born in this country.  I’m thankful that over two hundred years ago God inspired men and women who would set the moral and legal tone for the greatest nation in the world. I am so grateful that hundreds of thousands of men and women have given their lives over the centuries so that I have the right to voice my opinion.  So that I can disagree with my leaders, so that I have the right to vote, and so that I can worship freely!

Enjoy the hamburgers, hot dogs, and fireworks!  I hope you get to connect with old family members and friends, and spend time with your spouse and kids.

I hope I will be content knowing how good I have it compared to so many others.

God Bless America!

Happy 4th!
Todd Smith
