In case you didn’t know, Allan Hall loves music. I would estimate that he has thousands of CDs and who knows how many actual records from way back when. If you mention a song or a singer, he’s heard of them. Well, he is a huge Whitney Houston fan and one day in sound check he started talking about this song that I just had to do. So he began singing it and teaching it to me. It was several months of just messing around in sound check before I actually downloaded it to hear how it was really done. This song is so amazing. I know we sometimes catch flack for covering songs, but the truth is, most artists don’t write all their own music, so they’re covering something… besides, if a song is beautiful and it moves us, then we want to record it and I’m so glad we did.
In concert we always try to find a way to connect with the song on more than just a musical level. With “I Look to You”, it became so personal to me that it wasn’t difficult. I’ve battled weight issues my whole life, and last year I realized that I had to make a change; at 282 pounds I was unhealthy and miserable. God has brought me through an 80 pound weight loss and an amazing journey in the last year and I’ve come to realize that all those years of dieting and obsessing over food were because I was looking at the situation instead of God. I was freaking out over what I was seeing on the scale or hearing from other people instead of looking to Him and the truth that the Bible says about me. This is more than just a great power ballad to me. It’s my heartsong. I’ve learned that everything I go through has a purpose and as long as I keep my eyes and heart focused on God, He’ll bring me through it better and stronger.
